Gillain explores Truffaut’s search for that secret as well as the more personal secret that eluded him, the ways his own films revealed his subconscious desires. Gillain was before her time when she wrote this psychobiography more than 20 years ago, examining how Truffaut’s childhood memories of abandonment inspired a succession of motifs in his films focused on distant mother figures for whom the characters search. Truffaut’s motto, that films were “ivory eggs” to be viewed but not broken into, reflected his sense that understanding interfered with the creative process. Gillain examines Truffaut’s works in pairs, contrasting their motifs with unconscious efforts to work out conflicts in his life, from his troubled childhood to his affair with actress Catherine Deneuve. Among the films she pairs and analyzes are The 400 Blows and The Woman Next Door; and Shoot the Piano Player and The Soft Skin. About the Author

Anne Gillain is Professor Emerita at Wellesley College and is known for her work in French cinema, particularly the films of François Truffaut. She is author of Le Cinéma selon François Truffaut and The 400 Blows.

Wonderful book on a great subject

I love this book, and it has prompted me to study more of Truffaut's films. It is an excellent survey of Truffaut's films, but has been criticized for its psychoanalytical notions. I don't find these to be excessive or inappropriate, even though I consider psychoanalysis to be passe. Psychological theory is essentially handicapped by the disparity between interesting questions and methodloogy that cannot reach those interesting questions while standing on scientific foundations, and psychoanalysis wasn't satisfied only to tiptoe above those foundations. Gillain's basic analysis of Truffaut is plausible enough to me. Further, Truffaut refers to psychoanalysis in his interview of Hitchcock. Psychoanalytic theory (e.g. Norman Brown's "Life Against Death") was popular when Truffaut made his films. Gillain's analysis shows interesting relationships among the themes in many of Truffaut's films. I watched "The Wild Child" after reading about it in her book. This film, with a rather scientific attitude derived from Dr. Itard's book, "Victor of Aveyron," has none of the sexual intrigue found in Truffaut's best films, but those who know him as the author of "The 400 Blows" can appreciate the richness of his performance as the often puzzled Dr. Itard, since he was himself a wild child before he became a film maker. This perception alone would make Gillain's book worth reading. Her style is lively and consistently interesting, and she has much to say. Truffaut liked talking with her, and I recommend her book highly.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Biology - Evolution, grade: magna cum laude, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Theoretische Biologie), language: English, abstract: Creating music is a distinctive behavior of our species: Humans of all cultures occasionally gather to make music together. However, there is discussion amongst scientists as to whether such behavior is a manifestation of innate psychological mechanisms that evolved as adaptations for music, or whether the diversity of musical behavior simply exemplifies the inventiveness of the human mind, in which case music should be considered a product of human culture. Scholars advocating the latter view divide further into those who believe that music is an evolutionary by-product, existing only for hedonistic reasons, and those who argue that certain musical behaviors emerged because they serve some culturally adaptive function. The goal of my dissertation was to add new empirical data to this debate by conducting behavioral studies with preschool children. In study 1 I tested the hypothesis that certain musical rituals emerged to foster social bonding, ultimately increasing prosocial in-group behavior. I found that joint music making enhances subsequent cooperative and helpful behavior among pairs of 4-year-old children. In study 2 I investigated the ontogeny of rhythmic entrainment, our ability to move in synchrony to a musical beat. I found that children spontaneously entrain their movements to an external drum beat at earlier ages and with higher accuracy if that beat is presented in a social context. Study 2 revealed large inter-individual differences in synchronization accuracy. To explain these, I hypothesized that rhythmic entrainment develops via social learning processes during early musical enculturation. I extended the original design of study 2 by adding a new condition (joint drumming without visual access to the partner’s movements) and a questionnaire about the participants’ musical experience. I collected comparable data from Germany and Brazil, assuming that children from those two countries gain qualitatively different experience with music. I found that in both samples the differences in synchronization accuracy correlated with those in musical experience. Furthermore, only German children tended to drum out of synchrony if the partner’s movements were hidden from view. I discuss my results in light of the above scenarios and come to the conclusion that music’s apparent adaptiveness to various instances of its use can be best explained by cumulative cultural evolution.

Schließlich wird durch einen Streit Brünhilds mit Kriemhild, der auf den Betrug zurückgeht, die Ermordung Sigfrids in die Wege geleitet.
Doch diese Schilderung der Rolle Brünhilds ist in ihrer Kürze provokant und läßt vieles übersehen. Zwar enthält die Ausarbeitung dieser Textfigur vielfach nur Andeutungen, zeigt Widersprüche auf und läßt eine Menge von Fragen offen, aber gerade hierdurch wird das Interesse an der Brünhildgestalt geweckt. Man erahnt, daß die Geschichte über Brünhild, vor allem ihre Beziehung zu Sigfrid, ursprünglich eine größere Stofffülle beinhaltet als im Nibelungenlied offensichtlich wird, und beginnt, Motive des Textes zu hinterfragen.

Children and adults are confronted and influenced by those stereotypes, most of the time internalize them and behave according to their gender roles. Men and women perform different roles which are based on nothing more than their biological gender. Although these roles cannot be referred to each individual, the majority of people live out their lives in accordance to these pervasive roles.
To sum it up, gender is a central and “organizing category in social life” (Warren 7).
Women anthropologists from the 1920s up to the present time focused their research on Western women’s issues and examined women’s settings. Their result is that mainly the domestic sphere, child rearing, health and nutrition are the settings or the tasks ascribed to women. In part, this is - according to the anthropologists - a consequence of expectations associated with the society’s home territory and with Western anthropologist’s cultural assumptions. Additionally, the societies which were studied by these anthropologists were often highly gender-segregated and numerous roles and activities could be taken by one gender and were banned to the other (Warren 16).
To put in other words, most societies are “husband-centered” (Warren 14) and some of the societies studied “to a degree even greater than is customary in Western Europe and America”. (ibid.)
The novel “Bastard Out of Carolina” written by Dorothy Allison deals with gender stereotypes and tells the story of the so called ‘white trash’-girl Ruth ‘Bone’ Boatwright and her family. Allison critiques in the novel not only two of the most damaging bourgeois myths about “white trash” - illegitimacy and incest – but also the ideology of motherhood emphasizing a socially constructed gender system that cuts across social classes (Baker).

Der Mann, der die vorstehenden Worte äußerte, war einer der beiden Gründer des Nachrichtenmagazins TIME. Das ab 1923 wöchentlich erscheinende Nachrichtenmagazin, dessen Auflage rasch wuchs, etablierte auf dem US-amerikanischen Markt der Printmedien einen neuen journalistischen Ansatz. Obwohl die unkonventionelle Schreibweise der Autoren auch Spott provozierte, bildete sich eine treue Leserschaft.
Im Juni 1950 brach auf der koreanischen Halbinsel ein bewaffneter Konflikt aus, nachdem nordkoreanische Truppen den 38. Breitengrad überschritten hatten. Dieser war im August 1945 als Grenze zwischen der sowjetischen und der US-amerikanischen Besatzungszone festgelegt worden. Bis 1948 hatten sich in beiden Besatzungszonen zwei eigenständige Staaten gebildet; im Norden die Demokratische Volksrepublik Korea unter dem kommunistisch geprägten Machthaber Kim Il-sung und im Süden die Republik Korea unter dem kapitalistisch orientierten Staatschef Rhee Syngman. Diese Teilung sollte eine Spaltung der koreanischen Halbinsel zementieren, die bis zum heutigen Tage besteht.
Ab etwa 1947 konnte in den USA eine stark zunehmende Angst vor einer kommunistischen Unterwanderung und einer weltweiten Ausbreitung des Kommunismus beobachtet werden. Diese Angst beeinflusste sowohl die Darstellung kommunistischer Länder in den Erzeugnissen der Presse als auch die Wahrnehmung der Leser in starkem Maße. In den Artikeln des Nachrichtenmagazins TIME aus den Jahren 1950 bis 1953 tritt dies deutlich zu Tage.
Anhand dieser Artikel soll untersucht werden, wie die Darstellung des Koreakrieges in TIME aufgebaut war. Die Analyse soll sich dabei auf die Kriegsjahre 1950 bis 1953 beschränken. Da über die Auswirkungen der Berichterstattung in dieser Zeit nur Vermutungen angestellt werden können, bezieht sich die Analyse auf die sprachlichen Mittel, Argumentationsstränge und von TIME dargebotenen Erklärungen zu bestimmten politischen und gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhängen.
Den ersten Teil dieser Arbeit bildet ein Überblick über den historischen Hintergrund jener Jahre und einer Übersicht über die Entwicklung im Norden und Süden der koreanischen Halbinsel bis zur Gründung der beiden selbstständigen Staaten...

Die Entscheidung zur Wahl des Studienganges war zuvor während eines einjährigen Aufenthaltes im englischsprachigen Ausland wesentlich geprägt worden. Sein großes Interesse an der Sprachwissenschaft, an fremden Kulturen und am geschichtlichen Themenbereich des Kalten Krieges veranlassten ihn dazu, sich in der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit thematisch einer Kombination dieser Interessen zuzuwenden.

Sie werden im Wege der Sozialisation, d. h. aufgrund vielfältiger Einflüsse vermittelt, wobei […] nicht zuletzt die Massenmedien eine zentrale Rolle spielen.“ In diese Massenmedien reiht sich auch der Film „Vorstadtkrokodile 2“ ein, der 2010 in den deutschen Kinos erschien und der zweite Teil zu der Verfilmung der „Vorstadtkrokodile“ ist. Die Besonderheit im Film „Vorstadtkrokodile 2“ besteht darin, dass durch den Film die Verfilmung von 2009 fortgesetzt wurde und er daher auf keiner literarischen Grundlage beruht, sondern ein Buch zum Film erschienen ist. Der erste Film der „Vorstadtkrokodile“ lehnt sich an das gleichnamige Buch von Max von der Grün aus dem Jahr 1976 an. Dieses Buch stellt eines der Klassiker des Deutschunterrichts in der Unterstufe dar. Neben dem Aspekt der Freundschaft in einer „Bande“ wird darin insbesondere die Problematik und der Umgang mit körperlicher Behinderung bei Kindern und Jugendlichen behandelt. Im Gegensatz zu Max von der Grüns Werk spielt „Vorstadtkrokodile 2“ nicht nur über 30 Jahre später in der heutigen Zeit, es haben sich in den Neuverfilmungen auch Änderungen bei den Darstellern und in der Handlung ergeben. In den neuen Verfilmungen steht außer der Integration eines behinderten Jungen in die Gemeinschaft noch mehr die von anderen „Außenseitertypen“ im Vordergrund. Außerdem soll auch im zweiten Teil die große Bedeutung von Freundschaft und Zusammenhalt thematisiert werden. Ob die darüber hinaus – auch unterschwellig - vermittelten Werte und Eindrücke des Films pädagogisch sinnvoll sind, ist fraglich. Der Film scheint vor allem ein wenig realistisches Umfeld von Kindern darzustellen und seine jungen Zuschauer in eine idealistische Welt zu versetzen, in der Kinder junge Erwachsene sind, für die beinahe nichts unmöglich ist. Ob diese Kritik begründet ist, soll im Folgenden erläutert werden.
