In support of his contention he writes nearly three hundred pages under such captions as "The Homeric World in War," "Homer and Ionia" "Bronze and Iron," "Burial and the Future Life," and "The Great Discrepancies." It goes without saying that the argumentation is serious. Some historians have long been in accord with Mr. Lang's principal views, while differing from him about many details ; but from friend and foe alike the book deserves attention.

This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer.

About the Author

Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

Auch sich verändernde gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen wie die Demographie, Einstellung zur Familie sowie ein verändertes Rollenverständnis von Männern und Frauen zeichnet diese Epoche aus. Diese Entwicklungen beeinflussen Strukturen in Unternehmen und stoßen Veränderungs- und Innovationsprozesse an. Mitarbeiter müssen sich daher auf neue Arbeitsbedingungen einstellen und ihre Kompetenz entsprechend anpassen, denn Wissen ist heute die wichtigste Ressource eines Unternehmens. Durch sich veränderte Tätigkeitsabläufe und neue Belastungen können Erkrankungen oder Verletzungen auftreten. „Es gilt, die Kompetenz, Leistungsfähigkeit und Gesundheit des Einzelnen u.a. durch eine gesundheitsgerechte und sichere Gestaltung der Arbeit zu fördern. Dies ist Aufgabe des Arbeitsschutzes.“ Eine wichtige Stellung im System des Arbeitsschutzes hat dabei die Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit , welche Betrachtungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist. Hauptaugenmerke liegen dabei in der Betrachtung von Aufgaben einer Sicherheitsfachkraft und der Ausbildung zur Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit. Jedoch ist es unerlässlich, beim beschreiben dieser Themen darauf einzugehen, was Arbeitsschutz eigentlich ist, was seine Ziele sind und warum er in Betrieben verankert ist. Darauf aufbauend lässt sich sowohl ein Leitbild für die Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit erstellen und der Ausbildungsgang auf der Leitzielebene analysieren (Kapitel 5). Im Anschluss wird der curriculare Aufbau der Ausbildung zur Sicherheitsfachkraft beschrieben (Kapitel 6). Auf eine detaillierte Auseinandersetzung mit der Lehr-Lern-Prozess-Ebene wird aufgrund des juristischen Schwerpunktes dieser Hausarbeit verzichtet. Kapitel 7 widmet sich den Aufgaben der Sifa und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere das Zusammenwirken mit dem Betriebsarzt. Das letzte Kapitel dieser Hausarbeit fasst die Ergebnisse zusammen und gibt einen Ausblick.

Es kam zu Entwicklungen, die wir bis heute sehen und hören können, Entwicklungen, von denen heute viele Musiker und Zuhörer, Plattenlabel und Marketing-Verantwortliche direkt oder indirekt profitieren. Doch was verursachte diese Lawine? Woher kam sie und vor allen Dingen, was war davor?
Diese Arbeit versucht Aufschluss darüber zu geben, welche Ereignisse und Entwicklungen auf gesellschaftlicher, musikalischer und industrieller Ebene bis zum Ende der 50er Jahre im Zusammenhang mit dem Aufkommen des Rock and Rolls in den USA standen. Keith Brown is Professor at Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies. He is author of The Past in Question: Modern Macedonia and the Uncertainties of Nation and editor of Transacting Transition: The Micropolitics of Democracy Assistance in the former Yugoslavia.

Excellent, Thought-Provoking Study

In 1903, members of the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization were often considered terrorists, and some later specifically described themselves as terrorists: killers for a cause. But by 1948, many wars and struggles later, the surviving elderly veterans of the group were retrospectively considered freedom fighters by the new Yugoslav Macedonian government, and were invited to apply for pension recognition. Although the shift in categorization from terrorist to freedom fighter is not Keith Brown's specific or overriding subject in this fine monograph, it hovered in my mind throughout my reading of the book, probably because it is an issue that has obvious contemporary relevance and that will never be fully settled to everyone's satisfaction. The linchpin seems to be that if one approves of the goals of a revolutionary organization, one has moved some way towards excusing its methods, and in re-defining terrorists as freedom fighters.

Brown's study is specialized, but quite readable. He uses up-to-date historical and anthropological concepts without getting bogged down in impenetrable language or overly convoluted relations of ideas. He also does not commit the common sin of sniffily dismissing earlier literature on his topic - in fact, he mines such writing, both academic and popular, for all it is worth, and in a very respectful spirit. His chief sources are archival - the aforementioned pension applications, and British Foreign Office records. His goal is to trace the internal workings of the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization through anthropological analysis. The promotional copy for the book lays out the project well: "Keith Brown focuses on social and cultural mechanisms of loyalty to describe the circuits of trust and terror--webs of secret communications and bonds of solidarity--that linked migrant workers, remote villagers, and their leaders in common cause. Loyalties were covertly created and maintained through acts of oath-taking, record-keeping, arms-trading, and in the use and management of deadly violence."

Brown has some pointed things to say about the interpretation of past events in the Balkans through a prism of contemporary ethno-nationalism, even suggesting that it was not an ESSENTIAL goal of the MRO to replace one "distant" governing authority, the Ottoman Empire, with another, localized government that would presumably be more representative of and responsive to the people. He calls this skepticism "thinking past the nation," borrowing a term from Arjun Appadurai, and he draws on James Scott's work on traditional forms of "anarchist" resistance to "being governed" to elucidate the theme. I can identify this as an area where experts will debate his conclusions, without claiming any competence to make a judgment on them myself.

The readership for a work of academic history such as this, driven by analysis rather than narrative, is naturally somewhat circumscribed, but it could be larger than it is. Enthusiastic readers of "popular history" ought not to be overly wary of tackling more advanced analyses which will help them to understand historical events in a different, more complex way, and in fact this book is a perfectly recommendable one in that respect, because it is challenging without being inaccessible to the typical educated reader. Brown opens up the concepts that he uses in a way that invites further curiosity, rather than shutting it down, and his very ample bibliography offers many avenues for additional exploration.

Anschließend werde ich genauer darauf eingehen, auf welche Art und Weise der neue Konsul Marius argumentiert, um seine Wahl zu rechtfertigen und die Zuhörer in seinen Bann zu ziehen und im Anschluss werde ich die wichtigsten Aussagen der mir vorliegenden Quelle mit denen einer anderen Quelle vergleichen. Im Schlussteil meiner Arbeit werde ich anhand der Rede von Marius untersuchen, welche Rolle die politische Rede in der römischen Republik gespielt hat, bevor ich die wichtigsten Arbeitsergebnisse am Ende noch einmal kurz zusammenfasse.

Roosevelt and La Guardia were an odd couple: patrician president and immigrant mayor, fireside chat and tabloid cartoon, pragmatic Democrat and reform Republican. But together, as leaders of America’s two largest governments in the depths of the Great Depression, they fashioned a route to recovery for the nation and the master plan for a great city.

Roosevelt and his “Brain Trust”—shrewd, energetic advisors such as Harold Ickes and Harry Hopkins—sought to fight the Depression by channeling federal resources through America’s cities and counties. La Guardia had replaced Tammany Hall cronies with policy experts, such as the imperious Robert Moses, who were committed to a strong public sector. The two leaders worked closely together. La Guardia had a direct line of communication with FDR and his staff, often visiting Washington carrying piles of blueprints. Roosevelt relied on the mayor as his link to the nation’s cities and their needs. The combination was potent. La Guardia’s Gotham became a laboratory for New Deal reform. Roosevelt’s New Deal transformed city initiatives into major programs such as the Works Progress Administration, which changed the physical face of the United States. Together they built parks, bridges, and schools; put the unemployed to work; and strengthened the Progressive vision of government as serving the public purpose.

The partnership

"City of Ambition", a recent book by Mason Williams, offers a welcome look at the relationship between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Fiorello LaGuardia. Serving concurrently as President of the United States and Mayor of New York, these two men, of different political parties, moved the city along during the depression and the Second World War. It was a partnership that benefitted both...and the city.

The author's in-depth look at these two men is excellent, though the book is dryly presented. Perhaps the best part of "City of Ambition" is Mayor LaGuardia's wish to serve in the military, only to be turned down just as he thought he'd been given a role. This is a very good book and I recommended it.

A five star rating for this must read history of how New York City was able to prosper, paradoxically, during the great depression due to the combined efforts of La Guardia and FDR, both visionaries and politicians able to put party politics aside and accomplish great things for a great city. This highly detailed work delves into aspects of political deal making heretofore not fully described in other works characterizing this era. I would recommend this fine historical review for all of those interested in the development and growth of the greatest city in the world.
