Das griechische Wort „auto“ bedeutet „selbst“. Daraus folgere ich: ein Autor ist jemand, der etwas selbst verfasst oder Urheber von etwas ist. Die Erklärung scheint sehr einfach zu sein und tatsächlich wird im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch ein Autor meist als Schöpfer eines Textes oder Buches angesehen. Dass diese Bezeichnung aber viel mehr ist als bloß ein Name und eine ungeahnte Komplexität erreichen kann, zeigte Michel Foucault (1926 – 1984) in seinem Vortrag „Was ist ein Autor?“, den er am 22. Februar 1969 im Collège de France hielt.

Dieser Vortrag gliedert sich insgesamt in vier Teile, die der Frage nachgehen sollen, was ein Autor überhaupt ist. Zunächst klärt er einige Begriffe, die für das Verständnis der weiteren Ausführungen von Bedeutung sind. Da wären die Termini des Schreibens, des Werkes und der Präzisierung, inwiefern er seine Erläuterungen zum Autor-Begriff abgrenzen muss. Ziel seines Vortrages ist es, das „Verhältnis von Text und Autor ins Auge zu fassen, die Art, in der der Text auf jene Figur verweist, die ihm, zumindest dem Anschein nach, äußerlich ist und ihm vorausgeht.“ (vgl. S. 1007) Das aufgegriffene Zitat von dem Schriftsteller Samuel Beckett (1906 – 1989) „Was liegt daran wer spricht, hat jemand gesagt, was liegt daran wer spricht?“ (vgl. S. 1007) und die damit konnotierende Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber dem Autor stellt Foucaults zentrale These dar.
Im zweiten Teil skizziert er die Probleme, die mit dem Gebrauch des Autorennamens ver-bunden sind und unterscheidet zwischen Eigennamen und Autorenname sowie der Autoren-funktion. Foucault behauptet, dass der Eigenname eher eine bezeichnende und beschrei-bende Funktion hat, währenddessen der Autorenname eine „ [...] bestimmte Erscheinungs-weise des Diskurses charakterisier[t]“ (vgl. S. 1014). Desweiteren zählt er vier Merkmale auf, wie man den Autor in einem Text oder Buch erkennen kann.

Il più interesante qui è che questa tradizione non è più né oggetto di rovesciamento caricaturale, né di idealizzazione in chiave umanistica, ma è pura finzione letteraria nella quale si gioca uno spettacolo dell'umana esistenza. Il poeta parla dei cavalieri, ma è chiaro che, intanto, sta parlando d'altro. Il vecchio poema cavalleresco è morto, ed è nato il romanzo dell'uomo moderno.

D’accordo con questo punto di vista, l'inchiesta dei differenti personaggi è il principio dinamico dell'azione: tutti i personaggi sono alla ricerca di qualcuno o di qualcosa. Einleitend werde ich den Grund, die Entstehung und Definition des Staates erläutern. Anschließend vergleiche ich die Staatsideen von drei Philosophen Thomas Hobbes, John Locke und Jean-Jacques Rousseau, während ich den Schwerpunkt auf die Ansätze von Hobbes setze. Vorerst beginne ich mit dem historischen Hintergrund, um die Werke Hobbes zu kennzeichnen, um die Hintergründe der damaligen Zeit hervorzuheben. Thomas Hobbes wurde im Jahr 1588 in London geboren. Er war ein englischer Philosoph der Neuzeit und bedeutendster Staatstheoretiker des 17. Jahrhunderts. In dieser Epoche herrschten in England zahllose Bürgerkriege, wodurch auch eine politische Unsicherheit folgte. Hinzu kamen religiöse und moralische Probleme. Der religiöse Konflikt verlief zwischen unterschiedlichen theologischen Richtungen des Protestantismus. Die wichtigsten Elemente in seinem Leben waren vor allem durch politische Ereignisse im 17. Jahrhundert geprägt. Thomas Hobbes beschreibt die grausame politische Wirklichkeit des Bürgerkriegs und bringt Beispiele des politischen Zustandes der Moderne, die Vertragstheorie und vor allem die Staatphilosophie hervor. Er ist der Meinung, dass der Bürgerkrieg hätte vermieden werden können, wenn die Moralphilosophie und die politische Wissenschaft schon immer die Fortschritte der Naturwissenschaft anerkannt hätten, d.h. die politische Philosophie soll die wissenschaftlich begründeten Regeln herausfinden, die einen sicheren Aufbau des Staates ermöglichen. Nur dadurch kann es eine dauerhafte politische Ordnung geschaffen werden (vgl. Speth, Rudolf 2006: 96).

About the Author
Michael D’Alessio earned his B.S. in Biology from Seton Hall University, South Orange, New Jersey, and his M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He has had an extensive career teaching all levels of mathematics and science, including AP® Biology. Mr. D’Alessio serves as the Supervisor of the Mathematics and Business Department at Watchung Hills Regional High School in Warren, New Jersey.

Lauren Gross earned her B.S. in Biology from Dickinson College and her Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from Pennsylvania State University. She teaches AP® Biology to homeschooled children in the United States and abroad for Pennsylvania Homeschoolers, where she is also a home education evaluator. As an assistant professor at Loyola College in Maryland, Ms. Gross taught various biology, genetics, and botany courses.

Jennifer C. Guercio earned an M.S. in Molecular Biology with a concentration in neuroscience from Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey. For the past several years, she has been doing research in neuroscience as well as teaching academic writing at Montclair State University. Ms. Guercio attended North Carolina State University as a Park Scholar where she earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees.

Good summary of an AP Biology class

If you are a student looking for a concise overview of an AP Biology course, this book does a good job of reviewing only those concepts being tested on the redesigned exam. It seems as though the authors actually looked at the learning objectives and essential knowledge statements and aligned their writing accordingly, unlike other review guides I have seen available. The book is written in outline format, which adds to its brevity and makes reviewing a bit easier. I also liked that the authors give students a brief summary of the science practices and examples of things that they might be asked about with regard to the science practices. At the beginning of the book there is a section that explains the types of questions that now populate the exam including grid-in questions that require calculation, which some students may not have ever had practice with. The authors also discuss the format and timing of the new exam, which I think is helpful for students to be aware of.

The only reason I give this book 3 stars is that there are no practice questions within. Most students are looking for a review guide that not only provides them a review of the material they've learned, but that also gives them a chance to practice with questions modeled after those like the ones that might appear on the exam.

EDITED: Previously, I had stated the access code within the book was good for a one-use access to a practice exam. A representative of REA contacted me with a clarification: "After redeeming the access code, the practice material is added to the student's account, and can be accessed as many times the student desires." So students can access the exam as many times as they like after an account has been established.

A digital copy of this practice exam for the iPad is also available.

In short, I would tell my students that this is a good resource, but if they want practice questions PLUS a concise overview of the course, this is not the book. Otherwise, this book does summarize the course quite nicely and does align it to the essential knowledge statements of the redesigned curriculum.

Excellent AP Prep

This is easily the best AP Bio prep book I've come across. I've virtually been using it in place of my standard textbook in class, and have been ahead of the curve the whole year. More than anything however, I found the test taking strategies to be second to none; the book shows you the best strategies for completing the multiple choice sections in a timely manner, and more importantly, informs you as to exactly the kind of essays that AP graders want to see.

Although I've been using it year-long, I would also recommend this book to anyone who needs some last minute preparation for their AP exam; there's very little extraneous information in the book, so you can be pretty sure everything you read is something that you'll need to know for the exam. Great book, highly reccomend.

Good Study Tool, but don't expect a 5

The Crash Course book for AP Biology is a good study tool. It reviews key areas and has some hints as to what the AP focuses on. The Crash Course helps to develop ideas for the Free Response section of the AP Test, but does not go in depth into many subjects. If you have studied the material all year, the Crash Course may be all you need. If you are looking for a great review that touches on everything, this book is not for you.

Anfang August unterrichtete ich jedoch bereits meine Familie über meinen Beschluss für ungewisse Zeit in Guatemala zu bleiben.
Ich wollte als Assistentin von lokalen Guías auf Touren durch den Regenwald im Petén arbeiten. Ab November hatte ich bereits eine Unterkunft bei einer Freundin in Flores und begann meine bisherigen Kontakte in der Tourismusbranche des Petén auszuweiten und jene zu den lokalen Guías zu vertiefen.

Seit seiner „Geburt“ - zu Beginn der Olympischen Spiele - hat der Tourismus bereits eine lange Geschichte und Entwicklung hinter sich. Heute ist er einer der bedeutendsten Sektoren für die Ökonomie weltweit; so auch für Guatemala. Die Auswirkungen zeigen sich im Positiven sowie im Negativen. Durch den Tourismus werden Länder zu Produkte und Menschen zu Akteuren in für Touristen konzipierten Schauspielen. Man suggeriert Authentizität und bedient sich dabei bereits existierender Mythen. „Vor der Reiseerfahrung steht die Fiktion“ hält Christoph Henning (1997: 95) in seinem Werk „Reiselust. Touristen, Tourismus und Urlaubskultur„ fest Während der Reise wird ihr oftmals der Lebensatem eingehaucht. Eine große Rolle, vor allem in geführten Reisen und Touren, spielen dabei die ReiseleiterInnen, die Tourguids bzw. die FremdenführerInnen - im Spanischen: Los Guías de Turistas.

Mein Interesse, sowie die Inspiration zu dieser Thematik „Las mujeres ausentes - Eine Teilnehmende Beobachtung im Berufsfeld der Guías de Turistas in Guatemala“, resultiert aus meinem Auslandsaufenthalt in Guatemala von Mitte Juni 2009 bis Anfang Juni 2010. Die Aufzeichnungen zu meiner Feldforschung, welche ich in Form einer teilnehmenden Beobachtung ab November 2009 bis März 2010 im Petén als Assistentin guatemaltekischer Guías de Turistas, sowie in einer Reiseagentur arbeitend führte, liegen dieser Arbeit als Informationsquelle zugrunde.

Mein Ziel ist es, anhand der Erörterung der Rolle und Bedeutung der Guías de Turistas für Touristen in Guatemala und im speziellen im Petén, sowie anhand meiner in diesem Feld ermittelten Daten, die Gründe der geringen Beteiligung und im Weiteren der Abwesenheit der Frauen in diesem Berufsfeld sowie dessen Auswirkung hinsichtlich der (Re-) Präsentation der Frauen Guatemalas darzustellen.

About the Author

Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska, Professor Emerita at the Institute of Pa¬leobiology, Polish Academy of Sciences, is a world-renowned specialist on Mesozoic mammals. She is author of Hunting for Dinosaurs and (with R. L. Cifelli and Z.-X. Luo) Mammals from the Age of Dinosaurs: Origins, Evolution, and Structure. Between 1963 and 1971, Kielan-Jaworowska organized eight paleontological expeditions to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. These expeditions assembled an impressive collec¬tion of dinosaurs and Cretaceous mammals. Her research has focused on the study of the detailed structure of the brain and musculature of early mammals and their evolutionary relationships.

Good update to 2004 book

Much easier to read and to follow than _Mammals in the Age of Dinosaurs_. Information on paleontology and the history of discovery are not well integrated, however. The nearly complete omission of discoveries prior to 1930 yields an unbalanced treatment.

In Pursuit of Early Mammals

The literature on Mammal life from the Age of Dinosaurs is lacking,however several good works have been published in recent years by superbly qualified authors of which Jaworowska is probably the best of the lot. This book is her second on the subject and updates information on mammals of the Triassic,Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods in detail. Photos and drawings are also in abundance. If you are interested in Dinosaurs and their world, this volume will help you to understand about their furry contemperaries none of which reached a size larger than a possum.

This is & perhaps has to be,a technical book; the best customers probably are those who are entranced by the origin of mammals, not just the more general topic of vertebrates or tetrapods. Not much of a story line here, except about paleontologists. Great book for serious students.
If you are a regular Amazon customer you should, if in doubt as to whether to buy, look at some of the pages from the book Amazon allows you to sample---Perhaps,especially, the last chapter: Search for "diversification" in the last chapter, around pages 219+.
