Eppure, mi sembra che in questi due canti, la tradizione epica sia più importante che l’amore cortese: si parla più di guerra, di cavalieri, di assalto, di combattimento e di lotta che di donne et d’amore. Il più interesante qui è che questa tradizione non è più né oggetto di rovesciamento caricaturale, né di idealizzazione in chiave umanistica, ma è pura finzione letteraria nella quale si gioca uno spettacolo dell'umana esistenza. Il poeta parla dei cavalieri, ma è chiaro che, intanto, sta parlando d'altro. Il vecchio poema cavalleresco è morto, ed è nato il romanzo dell'uomo moderno.
D’accordo con questo punto di vista, l'inchiesta dei differenti personaggi è il principio dinamico dell'azione: tutti i personaggi sono alla ricerca di qualcuno o di qualcosa. Ma in realtà questo è il significato superficiale, perché i personaggi sono veramente alla ricerca di se stessi: infatti, alla fine dell’inchiesta arrivano ad una più esatta valutazione di sé e dei propri desideri. La narrativa cavalleresca tradizionale scompigliava disordinatamente le azioni, mentre nel Furioso, due inchieste procedono per tutto il poema. Di questo modo, mi sembra che, per esempio, Astolfo ricerca se stesso e la sua valore attraverso una lotta permanente con tutto quello che è possibile da combattere (il gigante, il ladrone, etc).
