Humans may have a fundamental desire to succeed and feel competent, but game players choose to engage in an activity in which they are nearly certain to fail and feel incompetent. So why do we play video games even though they make us unhappy? Juul examines this paradox. In video games, as in tragic works of art, literature, theater, and cinema, it seems that we want to experience unpleasantness even if we also dislike it. Reader or audience reaction to tragedy is often explained as catharsis, as a purging of negative emotions. But, Juul points out, this doesn't seem to be the case for video game players. Games do not purge us of unpleasant emotions; they produce them in the first place. What, then, does failure in video game playing do? Juul argues that failure in a game is unique in that when you fail in a game, you (not a character) are in some way inadequate. Yet games also motivate us to play more, in order to escape that inadequacy, and the feeling of escaping failure (often by improving skills) is a central enjoyment of games. Games, writes Juul, are the art of failure: the singular art form that sets us up for failure and allows us to experience it and experiment with it. The Art of Failure is essential reading for anyone interested in video games, whether as entertainment, art, or education.

An interesting exploration of the link between fun and frustration

This is the best attempt I have read to explore what makes computer games so enjoyable, and how this is intimately connected to their being maddeningly frustrating. Even though this book is admirably short, it can come across as long-winded at times. And the use of figures seemed clumsy (but that might have been because of the Kindle formatting). I wish the author had aimed more for an essay and less for scientific jargon that obscures more than it clarifies.

I still recommend it to anyone interested in this subject, as there is little writing in this field. Another, longer but better written book, is Tom Bissell's Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter.

Insightful and direct

The irony with games is the fact that playing games, at least good ones, come with a stream of failure. If you've noticed that before and wondered why, this essay is remarkable in its directness and insight. If you're also interested in game studies, this essay is a wonderful illustration of at least one of the potential venues of game studies that is possible.

The anonymous author of the massive section devoted to Lancelot expanded the triangle Arthur-Guenevere-Lancelot into a rectangle, adding a figure named Galehaut, Lord of the Distant Isles, a powerful political and military foe to Arthur and a rival to Guenevere for the love of Lancelot. It is an extraordinary tale, this overlapping love story, which is recounted with an understanding of human desires and aspirations unprecedented in its depth and richness. For love of Lancelot, Galehaut surrenders his political ambitions, voluntarily submitting to the rule of Arthur; the same love leads him to facilitate the rapprochement of Lancelot and the Queen. The invincible Lord of the Distant Isles, who had seemed destined to conquer the world, becomes a paragon of love-inspired self-sacrifice.

Whether for political reasons or out of aversion to the homoerotic, later retellings of the Lancelot story, in whatever language, show little or no interest in Galehaut. This is especially true of Malory's great English treatment of the Arthurian legend in the 15th century, in which the "high prince" Galehaut appears but only peripherally and with no significant tie to Lancelot.

About the Author
Patricia Terry, having received a doctorate from Columbia University in medieval French literature, taught this subject at Barnard College and the University of California San Diego until her retirement in 1991. Among her verse translations of medieval texts are The Song of Roland, Poems of the Elder Edda, The Honeysuckle and the Hazel Tree, and Renard the Fox. Prose translations, with Nancy Vine Durling, include The Romance of the Rose, or Guillaume de Dole, and The Finding of the Grail. She and Samuel N. Rosenberg are working together on a collection of late medieval folk poems from France and Spain. A book of her own poems, Words of Silence, was published by Higganum Hill Press in 2005.

Rosenberg (A.B. 1957, Columbia College, and Ph.D. 1965, The Johns Hopkins University; Professor emeritus of French and Italian, Indiana University) is a medievalist whose interest in Old French literature is centered on textual edition and translation, primarily of lyric poetry and Arthurian narrative. Alone or in collaboration with other scholars, he has published numerous articles and books in these areas, including such works as Ami and Amile (1981, 1996) The Lyrics and Melodies of Gace Brulé (1985), The Monophonic Songs in the Roman de Fauvel (1991), Lancelot-Grail, The Old French Arthurian Vulgate in Translation (1993-96), Chansons des Trouvères (1995), Songs of the Troubadours and Trouvères (1997), Early French Tristan Poems (1998), Les Chansons de Colin Muset (2005), and The Old French Ballette (2006). He has recently accepted the position of editor for Encomia, the annual bulletin of the International Courtly Literature Society. His work with Patricia Terry on Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles, or The Book of Galehaut Retold is his first venture into the writing of original narrative.

Riviting page turner- Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles

This vividly retold story is a real page turner. I read it in one sitting, rivited. The setting, the mood, the sense of time, and most of all the main characters are facinating, engaging and inspire one to read on, to find out what will happen next in this exciting epic tale. All the classic issues of our current world are expertly addressed in this 13th century story- devotion, honor, discipline, faith, love, seperation, and death. Especially crafted are the sections illustrating the extraordinary love between Galehaut and Lancelot, and how both are inspired and challenged by it. Homo-eroticism is apparent in their love, but the text is so expertly handled by the translators that the overriding truth of their admiration for one another is not diluted by a notion that their love was singular in focus at all. I recommend this marvelous retelling of Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles to all. We are fortunate to have such exciting parts of this grand tale so wonderfully conveyed.

Beautiful story, beautifully told.

I read this book the way I read as a child: completely absorbed, carrying the book from room to room, feeling outside of time and space, afraid to see the last pages coming. This part of the Arthurian story is not so familiar to most of us; I am grateful to the authors (eminent medieval scholars and translators) for having remedied that situation with so much grace and perceptiveness. Their version is lively, engaging, heartfelt and deeply moving, without ever being sentimental. I would think a very broad public would love this book.

A rare work of art

This is excellent. Those who love the Arthurian mythos would do well to get a copy of this book. The understanding of the characters makes much less sense without it! Gaelhaut, the Giantess' Son, is neglected in the more famous translations, and it is high time someone came up and gave the original stories the attention they deserved. The spirit of the stories are kept well, and the sentences are often so simple they are haunting in their ability to stay with you. Lancelot is the perfect hero--his flaws are in his very perfection, and his friendship with Galehaut was a perfect counterbalance to the politics and dangerous times of the era. I would like to illuminate some of the examples that really made it stand out, but that would give things away for the reader. One of the lessons Lancelot learns from the Lady is that our most important mission is to Love. This is a very Celtic attitude, for without Love there is little reason to do anything. The love in the books takes on many forms: the group of people who hide Guenivere and Lancelot's love for each other, Arthur's warped love from witchcraft and his own insecurities, Gawain's love for his Uncle, and Gaelhaut and Lancelot's love for each other, so unalike in appearance and yet giving every appearance of two bodies wit one soul between them. The homeoerotic elements of the original text are rescued, and emphasize the growing tragedy as Lancelot's life slowly puts an end to his closest friend. This book is a keeper.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Sachunterricht, Heimatkunde (Grundschulpädagogik), Note: 1,3, Universität Erfurt, Veranstaltung: Biologische Grundlagen der Heimat- und Sachkunde, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Welche Chance zur Erhaltung der Artenvielfalt bietet die extensive ganzjährige Weidehaltung im Gegensatz zu modernen Landwirtschaftsformen wie die stallgebundene Massentierhaltung? Diese Leitfrage möchte ich versuchen im Verlauf meiner Arbeit zu beantworten. Seit vielen Jahren stehen bei der Tierhaltung einzig und allein Ertrag und Gewinn im Vordergrund. Die Verbraucher möchten Erzeugnisse möglichst günstig erwerben, und die Verkäufer möglichst viel gewinnen. Um dies zu gewährleisten setzen immer mehr Unternehmen auf Massentierhaltung, bei welcher die Tiere unter katastrophalen Lebensbedingungen aufgezogen, gezüchtet, gemästet und letztendlich geschlachtet werden. Gerade das Rind als Nutztierart, welche neben Fleisch, Milch und Leder auch Gülle oder Jauche und Mist liefert, ist aufgrund seiner Nutzungsvielfältigkeit besonders bedroht. Zu Beginn meiner Arbeit werde ich deshalb das Rind in Bezug auf seine Verbreitung, seine Geschichte, seine Merkmale und seine Rassen näher beleuchten. Anschließend werde ich den Begriff der extensiven Weidewirtschaft, als Gegenpart zur stallgebundenen Massentierhaltung, näher beschreiben. Letztendlich habe ich es mir zu Aufgabe gemacht, ein Unternehmen, welches extensive ganzjährige Weidehaltung betreibt und damit sehr erfolgreich ist, zu untersuchen und einige Bemerkungen über deren Umgang mit Arten- und Naturschutz zu machen, um eine Antwort auf die eingangs gestellte Frage zu erhalten.

Outstanding insight into artists studios

I really love this book, it has SO much to offer! I feel like I got to visit the artists in their studios and see how they put their spaces together first hand.

The thing that I liked most about this book is the variety of artists that are shown. Everyone has a style that suits their medium and I found it really intriguing to be able to compare them side by side in the book (I'm *still* drooling over the Wendy Vecchi's collection of library card file cabinets - what an excellent and beautiful way to organize your space!)

There are tips on how to organize and you can see how thrift store finds help you make a creative space for yourself that doesn't require building new construction.

Its a very genuine book, shows everyday artists and professional artists side by side and that makes the book a winner in my, well, book. I plan to give it as holiday gifts, its very inspirational!

Fine is you have never read Studios magazine

This is an attractive book, but it is simply a collection of articles that have previously been published in Studio's magazine - if you have read the magazines, then this book literally has nothing to offer - no more depth, no extra information (in fact less - in the magazine at least you get told what type of art the owner makes!) and no new inspiration. As a fan of the magazine I too was hoping for more depth from a book - extra information, how tos for flooring, lighting, organisation of space etc and new studio's or at least new information about previously featured studio's. Also, it is quite clear from the fact that the floorplans often do not match the photo's that in a number of places photo's have been reversed in the printing process, making things very confusing. Interweave books are usually of a high standard, and not just a rehash of the magazines. Disappointing. For better guides on to how to organize a quilt studio I would recommend 'Creating your perfect quilting space' by Lois Hallock and 'Organizing solutions for every quilter' by Carolyn Woods. A bit dated now, but also still useful is 'Dream sewing spaces' by Lynette Ranney Black.

I'm dreaming of a new studio, just like the ones inside this book

The studios showcased here are jam-packed with both practical and aspirational ideas - in other words, some of them could be easily incorporated into any of our work spaces, a few require an investment most of us probably don't have. They're all loads of fun to visit via the photographs and discussions with the artists who work there. There are a few international inclusions. I especially loved peeking into the creative spaces of Seth Apter and Tim Holtz.

Errichtungen von Universitätsschwerpunkten, wie dem Salzburger „Zentrum Theologie Interkulturell und Studium der Religionen“, zollen dieser Notwendigkeit des Dialogs mit anderen religiösen Traditionen Tribut und setzen in der theologischen Hochschulwelt ein Zeichen für die Brisanz und Aktualität der Fragestellungen.

Die Arbeiten des 2004 verstorbenen Jesuiten JACQUES DUPUIS werden bis auf wenige Ausnahmen in der deutschsprachigen Religionstheologie praktisch ignoriert. Er zählt zu den weltweit bedeutendsten katholischen Religionstheologen. Seine Hauptwerke wurden in die wichtigsten Sprachen übersetzt. Deutsche Übersetzungen suchte man aber lange Zeit vergeblich.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll versucht werden, die zentrale Fragestellung zu formulieren, auf die Dupuis mit seinem Werk versucht eine Antwort zu finden. So wird in einem Streifzug Dupuis‘ Suche nach einer Antwort auf eben diese Frage nachgegangen und der „rote Faden“ seiner Argumentation freigelegt.

Vor diesem eher systematisch arbeitenden Teil sollen zuerst einige einleitende biographische Bemerkungen zu Jacques Dupuis und eine kurze Beleuchtung der Auseinandersetzung mit der römischen Glaubenskongregation nach der Veröffentlichung seines Buches stehen. Hiermit soll ein Hintergrund geschaffen werden, vor welchem die Intention und die Genese des religionstheologischen Entwurfs Dupuis‘ klar hervortreten soll und dadurch gleichzeitig besser in einen größeren Kontext eingeordnet werden kann.
