Resurgent Antisemitism: Global Perspectives (Studies in Antisemitism)From Indiana University Press

Dating back millennia, antisemitism has been called "the longest hatred." Thought to be vanquished after the horrors of the Holocaust, in recent decades it has once again become a disturbing presence in many parts of the world. Resurgent Antisemitism presents original research that elucidates the social, intellectual, and ideological roots of the "new" antisemitism and the place it has come to occupy in the public sphere. By exploring the sources, goals, and consequences of today's antisemitism and its relationship to the past, the book contributes to an understanding of this phenomenon that may help diminish its appeal and mitigate its more harmful effects.

Review

"The present collection lays bare the double-think, identifies modern libels, and counters them with historical knowledge; it maps paths for further retrieval of such knowledge. It grants its audience a fuller understanding of the resurgent antisemitism not only as a social but also as an intellectual phenomenon, a nexus of different strands of cultural history." ―Modern Judaism

"Resurgent Antisemitism is an important study and includes numerous interesting voices, not merely academics, but also activists and writers." ―Jerusalem Post Magazine

analyzes the coordinates of antisemitism in its malevolent tentacles all over the world. The breadth of the inquiry is astonishing..." ―Jewish Post & Opinion

Modern Antisemitism c. 2012
By William Garrison Jr.
"Resurgent Antisemitism: Global Perspectives" ed. by Alvin H. Rosenfeld , (June 2013). Following condensed comments are from a review by Bruce Bawer in his Aug. 1, 2013 review in "Front Page Mag."

"Most of the essays illuminate the current situation for Jews in a specific corner of the world: Alejandro Baer (Spain), Zvi Gitelman (the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe); Szilvia Peremiczky (Hungary and Romania); Rifat N. Bali (Turkey), Paul Bogdanor (modern Britain), Anna Sommer Schneider (Poland), Eirik Eiglad (Norway), Matthias Küntzel (Middle East), Jamsheed K. Choksy (Iran).

"Less encouraging is the essay by Tel Aviv University's Ilan Avisar, who, pondering the especially depressing topic of Israeli antisemitism, declares: "Anti-Zionist argumentation has become a major phenomenon in Israeli intellectual life." Emanuele Ottolenghi, who also probes Jewish antisemitism, is particularly interested in the history of the self-hating Jew, a type exemplified by "Jewish converts, like Pablo Cristiani, who led the medieval trials against the Talmud, and Alfonso de Valladolid, who wrote ferocious anti-Jewish polemics in the fourteenth century." Dina Porat explores Holocaust denial; Tammi Rossman-Benjamin examines the way in which victim-group studies at U.S. colleges have intensified antisemitism on campus.

"Wistrich explains how Soviet rhetoric about Israel was picked up "by Arab intellectuals, nationalists, Islamists, and Marxists" - and, reaching across the Atlantic (as these essays otherwise seldom do), how antisemitism in Venezuela surged under the Hugo Chávez regime.

"This is a serious book - an important book. Yet it is also a book, alas, in which several of the contributors seem to shy away from spelling out the role of Islamic theology itself - of, most fundamentally, the actual contents of the Koran - in Islamic antisemitism.

"Yes, the Nazi-Muslim connections are important; but the reason why Nazi attitudes toward Jews took root so swiftly in the dry sand of the Muslim world, and flowered so lushly, is that they differed very little, in substance, from attitudes that are articulated repeatedly throughout Islam's holiest of books. ...What matters is the truth: and the truth is that Islam, from its very beginnings, has demonized Jews, and that this demonization is not a peripheral but a central element of the Muslim faith. Unless and until we recognize this fact, and address it head-on, we will not get very far at all in our effort to challenge the toxic Jew-hatred that is on the rise everywhere on the planet where the followers of Muhammed make their homes."

The oldest and cruelest racism
By Martin Kemp
Anti-Semitism persists, or resurges, in European countries where there are no longer any Jews. This book proves beyond all doubt that anti-Semitism is a profound and possibly incurable sickness of the mind.

Alternative explanations by Philip Collier
By Philip Collier
Mr Rosenfeld seems to believe that Israel is a perfect state and that Jews are the only perfect ethnic group in human history with the possible exception of Jews and Israelis who disagree with him.
An important question hardly even considered by the author is why the United States a country 98 percent non Jewish should finance Jewish nationalism on the other side of the world.
A possible problem with that was commented on by Hannah Arendt back in 1944 in a essay entitled "Zionism
reconsidered ". The book "Israel's Holocaust and the Politics
of Nationhood" by Israeli academic Idith Zertal published by the Cambridge University Press in 2005. This book got a favorable review from former Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo
Ben Ami. Page 160 of this book quotes Hannah Arendt as follows:

"Nationalism is bad enough when it trusts in nothing
but the rude force of the nation. A nationalism that
necessarily and admittedly depends upon the force of
a foreign nation is certainly worse. This is the
threatened fate of Jewish Nationalism and the
proposed Jewish State, surrounded inevitably by
Arab states and Arab peoples. Even a Jewish
majority in-- nay, even a transfer of all Palestine Arabs,
which is openly demanded by (Zionist) Revisionists--
would not substantially change a situation in which
Jews must either ask protection from an outside
power against their neighbors or effect a working
agreement with their neighbors… The Zionists, if
they continue to ignore the Mediterranean people
and watch out only for the big faraway powers, will
appear only as their tools, the agents of foreign and
hostile interests. Jews who know their own history
should be aware that such a state of affairs will
inevitably lead to a new wave of Jew--hatred, the
anti-Semitism of tomorrow."

Considering that Arendt wrote that 70 years ago what is happening now is a remarkable confirmation of what she
predicted.
It is quite obvious that Zionists then and now have ignored
what Arendt wrote. Contrary to much propoganda Zionists never even tried to make a fair deal with the Palestinians. This was made obvious in an article published in the Israeli newspaper "Ha'ir" on May 6, 1992. This article had an iinterview with Ariyeh Yitzhaki who was director of the Israeli
army archives in the 1960's . Later he was a senior lecturer
on military history in the Israeli army's officer training courses.
At the time he was a supporter of Rafael Eitan's Tsomet
party and therfore not some naive leftist.

Yitzhaki said "The time has now arrived…We can come
to terms with the ocean of lies in which we all grew up. In
almost every Arab village occupied by us during the War of
Independence, acts were committed which are defined as war
crimes, such as murders, massacres, and rapes…For many
Israelis it was easy to cling to the false claim that the Arabs
left the country because that was what their leaders ordered.
That is a total lie."

Yitzhaki documeted over 100 massacres during the 1948
war. Much of this took place before the Arabs attacked on May 15, 1948. There is good evidence that the Arab states
were galvanized by these events into joining the fight.
All of this should not be too surprising . Such things
have been a feature of human history for several thousand
years. What I find outrageous are claims by the likes of Alvin
Rosenfeld that Jews are the only people in human history who never did that sort of thing.
