A retired Army colonel, Collins has served in the Pentagon, acted as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Stability Operations, and taught as the United States Military Academy at West Point. He holds a doctorate in political science from Columbia University and has written a number of books on Afghanistan.

In fact, the NDU Press has a special pdf file that you can download to your kindle or Nook, for free. The book was not copyrighted so that government folks going to Afghanistan could download it for free or even make copies of their own. It is currently being issued to individuals --- military and civilian --- who are being deployed to Afghanistan. My name is Joseph J. The weapons had barely been tested before deployment and the potential consequences of the radioactive fallout were not yet fully understood. The first practical use of the bomb together with all its casualties initiated a future policy of deterrence. It was apparent what can happen if you go to war with a nuclear power. Still, no other nuclear weapon has ever since been deployed as an act of war.
In this research paper I will analyze the Duck and Cover propaganda short issued by the Federal Civil Defense Administration in the early 1950s as the primary source. I will focus on the content of the episode, its structural and cinematic means, and its desired and achieved affects toward its target audience. What were the reasons and goals behind this far-fetched and committed civil defense operation? Is it seen as an outspoken domestic act out of moral obligation from the government that comes with the responsibility of being a nuclear power? Was the nuclear fallout – which the film thoroughly neglects as a danger – really not known to the government at this point in time or was this knowledge deliberately held from the public? This last question defines greatly the core meaning of the film in historical terms. Eventually it determines whether Duck and Cover was merely a naïve piece of safety education or just a good excuse for conditioning a whole generation (as well as its parents) to the ideological challenges of the forthcoming decades of the Cold War.
This humble paper alone cannot answer all these questions but rather build a basis for extended research on the topic. Sources indicate that in government circles the secondary dangers that emanate from a nuclear blast like radioactive fall-out were at least partially known if not already scientifically proven at the time. The question about the decision to keep such knowledge from the broad public goes beyond the primary analysis this paper can provide.

Der erste Teil geht auf die frühen Jahre der Bundeswehr ein. Zunächst ist es wichtig, den Beginn der Bundeswehr zu betrachten. Im folgenden Kapitel soll daher ein Überblick über die Gründung der bundesrepublikanischen Armee gegeben werden. Im Vordergrund steht dabei nicht die strategische und organisatorische Planung und Durchführung, sondern der gesellschaftliche Aspekt. Wie wurde die Neugründung in der westdeutschen Gesellschaft wahrgenommen? Inwieweit waren die Bundesbürger von der Armeeneugründung betroffen? Welche Rolle spielte die Friedensbewegung in jener Zeit?
Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird speziell die Zeitspanne 1966-1969 betrachtet.
Wie entwickelte sich der Status der Bundeswehr in der Gesellschaft? Wie veränderte sich die Friedensbewegung? Und wie ist der Einfluss der APO zu bewerten?
Das letzte Kapitel der Arbeit liefert eine Zusammenfassung der gewonnenen Ergebnisse. An dieser Stelle soll ein relativ kurzer Vergleich zwischen den Gründungsjahren und der Zeit zwischen 1966 und 1969 gezogen werden.
Zum Schluss findet der Leser sämtliche Literaturhinweise.

Die Grenze zwischen Authentizität und Inszenierung ist fließend. Privates und Intimes wird emotionalisiert und der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. „Das seit den fünfziger Jahren etablierte Fenster zur Welt wandelt sich in einer Vielzahl von Reality-Soaps zum Fenster in das Privatleben“ . Inwieweit das gezeigte Privatleben als authentisch bezeichnet werden kann, soll hier anhand der Familienserie „Die Fussbroichs“ untersucht werden. Die Serie über die „kölsche“ Familie um Fred, Annemie und Frank und ihre Konsumgewohnheiten hat nicht nur im Rheinland Kultstatus errungen. 2006 gab es sogar Gerüchte um ein Comeback der Familie.

Zunächst werde ich einen kurzen Abriss über die Entwicklung des Reality-TV in Deutschland geben. Anschließend gilt es mit Hilfe von wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen die Einteilung der verschiedenen Varianten aufzuzeigen. Welche Formen des Reality-TV gibt es und worin lassen sich „Die Fussbroichs“ einordnen? Was machen diese Formen aus und welche Gemeinsamkeiten haben sie?

Abschließend werde ich näher auf Fiktionalität und Non-Fiktionalität eingehen. Inwieweit sind Formate des Reality-TV fiktional? Wie sieht die Realität des Reality-TV aus? Was macht das Spannungsverhältnis aus und wie kommt es bei „Die Fussbroichs“ zum tragen?

Reexamining the famous case of John Cage's 4'33", Dworkin links Cage's composition to Rauschenberg's White Paintings, Ken Friedman's Zen for Record (and Nam June Paik's Zen for Film), and other works, offering also a "guide to further listening" that surveys more than 100 scores and recordings of "silent" music. Dworkin argues that we should understand media not as blank, base things but as social events, and that there is no medium, understood in isolation, but only and always a plurality of media: interpretive activities taking place in socially inscribed space.
