1 Einleitung

1942/43 drehte der Regisseur Veit Harlan seinen vorletzten Film zur Zeit des „Dritten Reichs“, das Melodram Opfergang. Der Film kam Ende 1944 in die deutschen Kinos und wurde, trotz der desolaten Lage und der vielen zerbombten Kinos, einer der kommerziell erfolgreichsten Filme Harlans. Die zeitgenössische Presse und das Publikum waren sich einig, dies war ein Meisterwerk. Doch wer war der Regisseur dieses Films und was wollte er mit seinen Filmen erreichen? Die Zuschauer zu Tränen rühren, ablenken und zerstreuen, oder war da noch mehr? Und ist der Film Opfergang überhaupt als Melodram zu bezeichnen? Diesen Fragen soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden.
Zunächst wird dazu in Kapitel 2 ein genauer Blick auf die Biographie Veit Harlans zu werfen sein, um zu erkunden, inwieweit sich der Regisseur dem faschistischen Regime verpflichtet gefühlt hat. In Kapitel 3 folgt der theoretische Teil, der abklären soll, worauf sich die Begriffe >Genre< und >Melodram< beziehen, um im Folgenden prüfen zu können, ob es sich bei dem Film Opfergang um ein Melodram handelt. Der Inhalt und die Produktionsumstände des Films werden im Mittelpunkt des vierten Kapitels stehen. Im fünften Kapitel schließlich folgt der analytische Teil, in dem nach einer thematischen Einleitung drei Sequenzen aus dem Film ausgewählt und einer detaillierten Betrachtung unterzogen werden, um melodramatische Elemente im Film verorten zu können. In einem zweiten Arbeitsschritt wird darauf eingegangen, ob faschistisches Gedankengut Einzug in den Film halten konnte. [..]
