Wenn man sie aber als eigenständige Akteure betrachtet, die ihre Beiträge zur Debatte in ganz unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen platzieren und individuelle rhetorische Strategien verfolgen, wird deutlich, dass der „Tod des Autors“ nicht als ein gemeinschaftlich erarbeitetes und von vornherein poststrukturalistisch orientiertes Konzept aufgefasst werden kann. Die Rede vom „Tod“ oder „Verschwinden des Autors“ ist vielmehr ein Übergangsphänomen, das zu einer Zeit aufkommt, in der sowohl Barthes, als auch Foucault wichtige Umbauten an ihren Theorieprojekten vornehmen. Erst durch die spätere Rezeption werden beide Beiträge mit einem gemeinsamen Schlagwort versehen. Gerade aber Foucault ist mit einigem Aufwand darum bemüht, sich der Gefahr einer solchen Summierung zu entziehen.
