Ontological Humility: Lord Voldemort and the Philosophers, by Nancy J. Holland

Explores ontological humility in the history of philosophy, from Descartes to contemporary gender and race theory.

Neither self-effacing modesty nor religious meekness, ontological humility is a moral and philosophical attitude toward transcendence—the unknown and unknowable background of existence—and a recognition and awareness of the contingency and chance that influence the course of our lives. It is a concept that Nancy J. Holland finds both throughout the history of philosophy and across the volumes of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Tracing it through the philosophical thought of figures ranging from Descartes, Hume, and Kant to Heidegger, Beauvoir, Merleau-Ponty, and Derrida, Holland uses the Harry Potter saga as a guide to illustrate the concept, revealing a whole set of ethical imperatives. Connecting the concept to contemporary gender and race theory, she demonstrates its implications both for our understanding of the philosophical tradition and for the way we live our own lives.

“Nancy J. Holland’s Ontological Humility … makes philosophy publicly relevant again. And despite the scope of its task, the book remains captivating and accessible.” — Fila Sophia

Nancy J. Holland is Professor of Philosophy at Hamline University. She is the author of Is Women’s Philosophy Possible? and The Madwoman’s Reason: The Concept of the Appropriate in Ethical Thought. She is also the editor of Feminist Interpretations of Jacques Derrida and the coeditor (with Patricia Huntington) of Feminist Interpretations of Martin Heidegger.

A Philosophy 101 That Matters
By A Teleb
This book is well worth a read for anyone at all interested in philosophy. Here are a couple of paragraphs from a longer review of the book I posted elsewhere.

--------------------------------

From Descartes to Derrida, Holland guides us through Rationalism, Empiricism, Existentialism, Phenomenology, to Post-Structuralism, then on a bonus excursion through contemporary feminist and critical-race theories. The tour is a "Philosophy 101 that Matters," because the questions it covers concern our everyday experience of nature, language, knowledge, and others. What can we know about the world and how certain can we be of that knowledge? What does this imply for how we interact with nature and others? "Ontological humility" according to Holland is an attitude towards the unknown/unknowable combined with an awareness of the contingency of one's position/condition in the world. These two prongs of humility are at the heart of the Harry Potter saga and Martin Heidegger's thought. If anything describes Harry's world it is a) "not having been told all that he needs to know" and b) his humility towards the magic he's been unexpectedly given.

.................................

These chapters are the high point of the book, not surprisingly given that Holland has edited volumes called Feminist Interpretations of Heidegger and Feminist Interpretations of Derrida, respectively. They are nothing less than gems of clarity and insight. One leaves with living, breathing impressions of each philosopher, a key-chain talking miniature Heidegger in one pocket, a flash-drive holographic word game playing Derrida in the other, as it were. This is a tremendous feat, because both are considered enigmatic, if not slippery, figures.

..........................

Histories of philosophy tend to come in two flavors: watered-down, dead lists of ideas or overly long anthologies. Ontological humility avoids both extremes. It achieves the impossible, a history of 400 years of philosophy that is accessible to a wide audience, engaging to most readers, and authentic, in under 150 pages. The last point alone merits a read. Holland takes a perspective and employs it as a guide to understanding the most important turning points of Western thought.
..........................

In summary, this book can seen as an excellent introductory philosophy textbook, or a quick history of philosophy between 1600-2013, but it also shares a timely wisdom, that can be traced back to the Ancient World. It might be fitting to end with a quote from Aristotle that opens Ontological Humility "[It] would be strange to think the art of politics the best knowledge, since man is not the best thing in the world."

A Thought Provoking Read
By Ralph Kerwin
A well thought out book on a topic that has long pre-occupied me, but that I have never seen explicitly addressed. The humility discussed here is a grounded uncertainty about one's place in existence rather than a humility in one's personal style. Ms. Holland (a university philosophy professor) identifies this underlying concept in the works of several well known philosophers, including Hume, Kant, and especially Heidegger. The connection to the JK Rowling series is both deep and delightful and will help those without a formal philosophy background (my case). The accounts of certain more recent philosophers (specifically Chapter 4 on Foucalt and Derreida ) were still difficult for me to follow, despite the Harry Potter assists. That perceived lack of accessibility (for a layperson) in Chapter 4 is my only reason for not giving this book a 5. Having said that, the ideas in this book have led me to appraise my own life and beliefs in a new light. That's the highest compliment I can give any book. Overall, I'm very impressed with what Ms. Holland has done. I would recommend this book to any other layperson who enjoys reading about matters of philosophy of human existence.
