It broadly covers an issue that few people are knowledgeable about. Well written and honest with its observations. It is surprising at points and faithful to the story it is trying to tell, a sad story that is still very much an issue ever with us today.

A must read for those interesting in Virginia history, African American and Native American identity

Dr. Coleman's study is a multi-paradigmatic examination of the complexity of the relationship that people of African-descent had with the original people in the state of Virginia. Not only does it expand the discourse about the interferring role of social policy, Coleman's study reiterates the raciality of identity ownership, law and politics, kinship and survival. She shows how philosophical and cultural ideas of kinship are compromised and corrupted by social policy. Her study answers sweeping generalizations of the nonexistence between African and Native American peoples, without compromising the value ane sanctity of African people and culture. From the arrival of the first Africans in Point Comfort, Hampton (not Jamestown) in 1619, to the colossal mistakes Native groups made by disavowing kinfolk who were mixed with Africans, the Racial Integrity Law of 1924, The Pocahontas Exception clause, to the historic 1967 Loving vs. Virginia, the intimidation of midwives, and the state's recognition of Native groups, Coleman meticulously uses court documents, and the trail of paperwork left by the State Registrar's Office, to show that there is data revealing that many Blacks and Native people were kin and coexisted. Dr. Coleman's study also shows the absurdity of racial purity ideology that has been systemically inculcated in all aspects of Virginia's history and social institutions. Her study reveals evidence that there are those who indeed are Black and Red, who pour libation-symbolic in African culture, and who also sprinkle tobacco on the ground-a ritual among Native cultures in the Americas. A necessary read for those who interested in these social issues.
