In a turn-of-the-century, once elegant building at 16 Ujazdowskie Avenue in the center of Warsaw, 10 Jewish families began reconstructing their lives after the Holocaust. While most surviving Polish Jews were making their homes in new countries, these families rebuilt on the rubble of the Polish capital and created new communities as they sought to distance themselves from the memory of a painful past. Based on interviews with family members, intensive research in archives, and the families' personal papers and correspondence, Karen Auerbach presents an engrossing story of loss and rebirth, political faith and disillusionment, and the persistence of Jewishness.

Jewish History From a New Perspective

It started with a chance remark. Karen Auerbach, a former journalist and current lecturer in East European Jewish history, traveled to Warsaw in 1997, trying to trace her grandmother's life there. As she got to know members of the community, she discovered that one building in particular - 16 Ujazdowskie Avenue - had nearly half of its apartments rented by Jewish families at a time when surviving Jews made up a very small percentage of Warsaw's population. These families - decimated by the Holocaust - had returned from the countries in which they had found refuge to rebuild their lives in Poland. Szymon Rudnicki, the son of one of these residents, comments, "You could write the twentieth-century history of Poland through this building." And in her new book, "The House at Ujazdowskie 16: Jewish Families in Warsaw after the Holocaust," Karen Auerbach does precisely that.
Ms. Auerbach follows eleven Jewish families who lived at this address, most notably the Adlers and the Bergmanns, who stand out because of the amount of information available on them. Most of these families shared a total lack of participation in Jewish observance and culture. Yet all suffered as a result of being Jewish, not only at the hands of the Nazis, but from the anti-semitism of the Communist party that governed Poland after the war. Jurek Neftalin explains, "In our home there were no Jewish traditions. . . And my father's Jewishness was like a very heavy suitcase. And I did not know what this suitcase was. I did not know about Jewish culture, about tradition, nothing." Another very striking image is that of Piotr Sztuczynski, whose hobby is making paper cuts using motifs of Hebrew letters that he cannot read.
Ms. Auerbach does a fine job of examining these families' lives, their relationship - or lack thereof - to Judaism, and how their lives tie into the history of Poland after the Second World War. But for me, the book really lit up in the epilogue, when the author switches to a more personal voice and recounts her own experiences in Warsaw. The detachment of the historian is gone, and people and places come to vivid life. I would like to hear more from that voice.

a sobering reality that the miseries of World War II did not end in 1945 for many people

"The House at Ujazdowskie 16" by Karen Auerbach tells the story of Jews who returned to Warsaw at the end of World War II. I had always assumed that once the war was over, that anti-Semitism stopped, as people there focused more on rebuilding and survival...but I was so wrong. It continued and developed into government suppression and blaming, ugly incidents on the street, firings from jobs, and so on, decades after World War II, as Polish Jews were still viewed as not Polish, but foreigners in their own country, no matter how long their ancestors had been living there. And the killings of Jews continued as well. This book tells the story of one building in Warsaw, and what happened to its Jewish families (even if they no longer practiced or had any idea of their heritage) in the years after World War II.

Jews in postwar Poland

The House at Ujazdowskie 16 examines the Jewish experience in postwar Poland by focusing on the Jewish residents of this Warsaw address. Most of the small, surviving remnant of Polish Jews had escaped the Holocaust as deportees to the Soviet Union, returning to Poland following the war. Secular Jews hoped the Soviet-sponsored Polish communist government would at least guarantee their equal rights as Polish citizens in a way that was not done in the increasingly anti-Semitic Second Republic. Several of the Ujazdowski 16 residents worked directly for the communist regime. Hope slowly turned to disillusionment as the promises of communism did not live up to expectations and institutionalized anti-Semitism began to gain steam. The Israeli victory over the Soviet-backed Arabs in the 1967 Six Day War followed by the 1968 anti-government protests led by Jewish students afforded the government an excuse to tap into popular anti-Semitism and purge Jews from their positions prompting most to emigrate to Israel and elsewhere.
Dr. Auerbach has done an excellent job of relating personal experiences to national events through the stories of the Aleje Ujazdowski Jews. This is an extremely readable and informative account.
