There have been a couple of good popular histories of Saturday Night Live, Hill and Weingrad’s Saturday Night (1986) and Shales and Andrew’s Live from New York (2002). Readers looking for a more analytical approach to SNL will want to check out this interesting collection of essays. The contributors, most university professors, take close looks at SNL’s political humor, its post-9/11 impact on the restoration of irony to American comedy, its handling of comedy aimed at an African American audience, its musical performers and how the show expects them to adjust their normal acts to fit into SNL’s format, and the show’s impact on network television (in 2006, NBC launched two series, a drama and a sitcom, about the production of a weekly sketch-comedy series). The writing here is quite dry, but the book is undeniably interesting as it explores the show from angles that many readers probably haven’t encountered previously. It takes a bit of work to get through the prose, but that effort is rewarded by a new appreciation for SNL’s creators, writers, and performers, and the ground they broke. --David Pitt
Review
"'Saturday Night Live' and American TV offers an unprecedented, comprehensive, and lively examination of critical transformations and creative strategies that historically have allowed SNL to demonstrate 'continuity and innovation,' relevance and convention, 'Live, from New York!' since 1975. Chapters re-examine common narratives about SNL and bring new attention to the series’ post-millennial transformations and extensions. 'Saturday Night Live' and American TV represents a critical model for understanding and assessing the characteristics of those rare 'old' and 'new' media entities that exhibit long-term success and ongoing, cross-generational, national, cultural relevance in an era of presumed ephemerality." ―Victoria E. Johnson, Author of Heartland TV: Primetime Television and the Struggle for U.S. Identity
"All the essays are scholarly and clear, and all end with a substantive bibliography.... The book is equally useful as a cohesive book or as a series of self-contained essays for a variety of disciplines.... Highly recommended." ―Choice
"If you like the variety show that weekly brings us outstanding sketch comedy and popular music, you'll find this book worthy." ―NUVO
"Readers looking for a more analytical approach to SNL will want to check out this interesting collection of essays.... The book is undeniably interesting as it explores the show from angles that many readers probably haven’t encountered previously." ―Booklist
"ForSNLfans,'Saturday Night Live' and American TVis an engaging analysis that places the show in a larger context of modern media studies, exploringSNL's impact on the cultural landscape both as a satiric reflection and surreptitious political peacemaker. The editors have compiled a thorough and often surprising volume that explores every part of theSNLmachine as well as the many advances it's made in the last ten years. A must-have on theSNLlover's bookshelf." ―Megh Wright, Splitsider.com
"Readers looking for an informative collection of essays from challenging vantage points will find a lot to love here." ―PopMatters
"The editors of this volume have produced a book that is not just important but vital. 'Saturday Night Live' and American TV offers a diversity of perspectives, and the essays are strong from start to finish. It stands out as distinctive." ―Christine Becker, author of It's the Pictures That Got Small: Hollywood Film Stars on 1950s Television
"Saturday Night Live is an important piece of US television's history and present, and Marx, Sienkiewicz, and Becker have collected a comparably substantive roster of authors to deftly examine the show from an expansive range of perspectives. An excellent contribution to television studies, the collection definitively covers the show's evolving form, approach, engagement with post-network technologies, and incorporation of social politics over its profound thirty-five year history." ―Amanda D. Lotz, author of The Television Will Be Revolutionized

Fascinating read about something we take for granted
By The Grey Keyboards
What SNL says about our society is more interesting that what we say about SNL. This book is really interesting analysis, from many different angles, of a TV show that has been providing laughs, and the occasional groans, for four decades. This book illustrates how each sketch, and each comedian, is deeply rooted in a single moment in a continuum of American cultural history.
I couldn't put it down. It's a challenging but fun read, and it'll make you want to go back and watch a lot of the older SNL content in a new light. Plus, how much great scholarship is there on late night humor? Definitely buy it.

The Definitive SNL Book
By SNL DAVE
As someone who's worked in the industry for over 23 years, and read almost every book about the industry, SNL and otherwise, I can say that this is one of the best books I have ever read. No more oral tales Chevy Chase being a jerk or Norm McDonald getting fired. Saturday Night Live and American TV is the first book I've read about SNL that has actually made me think. The fact that academics wrote this book is evident from every page. If you want to learn how Saturday Night Live as a cultural institution has evolved and mattered for so long, this is the book to get.

Thought-provoking analysis of SNL's place in American TV history
By Sidney
This book is a really interesting critical analysis of Saturday Night Live and the show's place in American television culture. It's a series of critical essays on different aspects of SNL, such as SNL and gender, SNL and race, how irony changed post-9/11, how SNL had to adapt as the industry changed from 3 network TV stations to cable to online content, etc. It's not a book of witty inside stories, but rather is a book that will really make you think about SNL, and television comedy in general, in a new light. The book is written by an assortment of media professors and scholars, so although it certainly does not read like a textbook, the text is more advanced than you might expect to find in a book about TV comedy. You won't read this book in one sitting, but read a chapter at a time, this book will help you become a more interesting and knowledgeable person!
