Dabei bildet Scientology eine eigene, in sich geschlossene Welt, die für Außenstehende schwer einzusehen und zu verstehen ist. Um dem Phänomen Scientology auf den Grund zu gehen, ist es zuerst nötig, sich mit der Entstehungsgeschichte des Kultes und mit dem Gründer Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (kurz: L. Ron Hubbard) zu beschäftigen. Außerdem ist es wichtig, den Grundzügen der Lehre, also das Verständnis der Welt, der menschlichen Psyche und der moralischen Wirklichkeit von Scientology einige Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen und sich die Techniken, wie neue Mitglieder geworben und indoktriert werden, anzuschauen. Erst dann ist es überhaupt möglich, tiefer in die Glaubenswelt und ihre Bezüge zu wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten und Theorien, z.B. denen von Darwin, einzudringen.
