About the Author
ROBERT SHERROD was a seasoned American journalist and longtime war correspondent for both Time and Life magazine. He reported from overseas during the Vietnam War, and also World War II, when he was travelling with the U.S. Marines. He went on to write two more books about World War II. Sherrod died in 1994 at the age of eighty-five.

Great story but TERRIBLE GRAMMAR. Please fix this book!!

This is a review not about the quality of the story told within, but of the atrocious and numerous spelling mistakes. I can't believe no one went through this book and fixed it prior to it being released on the middle store. It's AT LEAST every other page and it's usually more than one word per page. The mistakes aren't even just one letter mixed up, It's usually complete words. The publisher / author (not the story author, but whoever typed the kindle edition) should be ashamed. I am going to stop reading it and hopefully it will get fixed. It completely breaks my immersion when many words per page are spelled wrong or used wrong. Please fix it! This book deserves a 5 star rating.

Thoroughly detailed

But ponderously slow at times as the details become overwhelming. That said, the author writes on par with other authors of the same time period that delved into Guadalcanal and other battles. Make no mistake, EVERY person who do fought on Tarawa was a hero no matter what part they played. Some of them got to come home. I wish I had known more of them fifty years ago so I could have thanked them.

i read the 'one square mile of hell' and decided to read a contemporary story. i wish i could use the word happy about a story like this, but let's say that the book was very interesting. it exceeded my expectations
