Andreas Staab is the founder and director of EPIC―the European Policy Information Centre, a UK-based consultancy on the European Union. He teaches in the London programs of three North American universities and is author of National Identity in Eastern Germany.

Great place to start

Good summary of basic EU actors, institutions, and policy. A great place to start for those with some knowledge of history/political science but little idea of the inner workings of the EU.

EU up to date

The status of the European Union constantly changes. This book is up to date as of 2012. It covers history and current status of all the major institutions of the EU. It also show the impact of the EU on citizens and countries. The EU has improved lives and has improved the economies of Europe.

Solid, yet still challenged

Having grown up in Berlin during WW II, I have been deeply devoted to European friendship and integration ever since. To me, one of the most magnificent accomplishments of the 20th century has been the realization of the EU. This book, however, has brought me back to reality. The European Union's complex inner structure, the growing indifference of many of its citizens, the divergent motives of some of its member states, and the obscure end-stage of this magnificent effort make you wonder about the future. The original polarity between a stricter and a looser union, i. e. between supranationalism and intergovernmentalism, has become more pronounced. The mismanaged EMU (economic and monetary union) policy, triggered by the sovereign debt crisis, has been troublesome and has lowered the sense of harmony. Nationalist "Freedom Parties" have become vociferous. Looking ahead, this book even offers several options of fundamental structural alterations of the Union.
Germany is an essential player. Ever since the foundation of the German Reich in 1871, it has been the target of distrust and fear from its neighbors on account of its size and power. Not ever to have to suffer through catastrophic World Wars again, it has resolved to firmly embed and legally anchor itself within Europe, thus avoiding the appearance of an independent and menacing power. For the sake of its own safety, it has therefore been a stalwart defender of the Union and, I trust, will be successful in safeguarding it in one form or another.
Perhaps the most important step would be to create a unified European Military Force, along with dismantling national armies and relaying conflict resolution to the European Court rather than to the battlefield. With no nation having an army, Europe's "perpetual peace" would be guaranteed and Brussel's rule can thus be relaxed to more intergovernmental methods. Not only would that please those lukewarm Europeans, but it would more importantly open the gates into geographic expansion, for it would then more easily spread this marvelous European gospel, Peace-through-Trade-and-Common-Law, eastward into Asia. Who knows, once Vladimir Putin has gone, it might reach Vladivostok, or even go beyond.
