Das Reich wuchs immer mehr. Die neue Hauptstadt, Istanbul, wurde der politische und kulturelle Mittelpunkt, an dem die Gelehrten und Dichter zusammenströmten. Die Sultane förderten diese Entwicklung. Vor allem die religiösen Wissenschaften hatten damals ihre groβe Zeit, aber auch die Naturwissenschaften, die Astronomie und die Medizin. Man pflegte besonders die Beziehungen zu Persien, aber auch mit Mittelasien bestanden gewisse Verbindungen, und die Kenntnisse der uigurischen Schrift hörten noch nicht auf. Die Sprache selbst blieb nicht rein türkisch, man nahm immer mehr Fremdwörter auf; nicht nur persische und arabische, sondern auch griechische und italienische. Gegen Ende dieser Entwicklung konnten ganze Sätze des gehobenen Stiles aus lauter Fremdwörtern bestehen, und nur das letzte Verb war noch türkisch. Natürlich war eine solche Mischsprache nur für einen kleinen Kreis von Spezialisten verständlich, während die groβe Masse des Volkes ihr fremd gegenüberstand.
