Informationsmanagement hat unmittelbaren Einfluss auf den Unternehmenserfolg.
Unter Information versteht man „zweckorientiertes Wissen“, deren Zweck es ist, zielgerichtete Handlungen abzuleiten. Wenn Unternehmen die Informationsflut richtig auswerten und nutzen können, ergeben sich daraus erhebliche Wettbewerbsvorteile. Dies kann durch ein strategisch, in das Unternehmen integriertes Informationssystem geschehen.
„Informationsmanagement ist die wirtschaftliche (effiziente) Planung, Beschaf-fung, Verarbeitung, Distribution und Allokation von Informationen als Ressource zur Vorbereitung und Unterstützung von Entscheidungen (..) sowie die Gestaltung der dazu erforderlichen Rahmenbedingungen.“ Strategisches Informationsmanagement hat die Aufgabe, Voraussetzungen für ein operatives Informationsmanagement zu schaffen. Bei vielen Unternehmen ist die Errichtung eines effektiven Informationssystems noch nicht gelungen und so konnte von diesen Unternehmen der strategische Wettbewerbsvorteil, der durch eine systematische Auswertung von Informationen zu erlangen ist, noch nicht realisiert werden. Momentan fehlt es nicht an der Menge an Daten und Informationen, sondern an Instrumenten, durch die man Daten filtern und die relevanten aussortieren kann. Oftmals sind Informationen bereits im Unternehmen vorhanden und aufgrund eines mangelnden Informationssystems werden genau die gleichen Informationen zusätzlich extern hinzugekauft, was unnötige Kosten verursacht. So geben nach einer Studie von Informix² nur 21% der in Deutschland befragten Manager an, dass ihnen bei fundierten Geschäftsentscheidungen immer ausreichende Informationen zur Verfügung standen. Aus dieser Studie ergab sich, „dass in deutschen Unternehmen die Entscheidungsfindung von der informationellen Grundlage her nicht in wünschenswerter Weise abgesichert ist.“ Aufgabe des strategischen Informationsmanagements ist es, diesen Sachverhalt zu ändern und die nötigen Voraussetzungen für eine informations- bzw. wissensbasierte Entscheidungsfindung zu schaffen.
Gerade für Versicherungsunternehmen hat Informationsmanagement eine herausragende Bedeutung.
