August 1801, schreibt Kleist einen Brief an seine Verlobte Wilhelmine von Zenge. Darin fragt er sich unter anderem ob Gott von den Menschen Verantwortlichkeit fordern kann, „wenn man seit Jahrtausenden noch zweifelt, ob es [überhaupt] ein Recht gibt“ . Wenn wir nicht wissen was gut oder böse ist, was heißt es dann böses zu tun?
Was heißt das auch, etwas Böses tun, der Wirkung nach? Was ist böse? Absolut böse? Tausendfaltig verknüpft und verschlungen sind die Dinge der Welt, jede Handlung ist die Mutter von Millionen andern, und oft die schlechteste erzeugt die besten – Sage mir, wer auf dieser Erde hat schon etwas Böses getan? Etwas das böse wäre in alle Ewigkeit fort-?
Dieser Brief, behauptet Jürgen Schröder, lese sich „wie eine Quelle und ein Kommentar des gesamten Novellenwerks, vor allem aber des ‚Findlings’“ . Könnte dieser Brief also die Lösung sein, zu all den Fragen die die Novelle stellt? Wer ist der Böse in diesem Werk und wer trägt die Schuld an der Tragödie? Ist es Nicolo der undankbare Stiefsohn oder vielleicht doch sein Vater Piachi, der ihn in eine Rolle drängt in der er sich nicht selbst verwirklichen kann? Welche Rolle spielt dabei die Adoptivmutter Elvire? Hat sie Nicolo verführt oder ist sie doch nur ein Opfer?
Neben der Schuldfrage, wird auch die Frage danach, was Kleist uns mit dieser Novelle mitteilen und wen oder was er kritisieren wollte, thematisiert. Ziel der Hausarbeit ist es, einen Überblick über die Forschungslage, von den 1950ger Jahren bis heute, zu erhalten. Die herausgearbeiteten, dominierenden Deutungsansätze der verschiedenen Interpreten, sollen dann nach einer Interpretation dazu verhelfen, die genannten Fragen zu beantworten. Dabei wird auch die soziale Lage und die Stellung Kleists in der Gesellschaft, zur Entstehungszeit der Novelle, berücksichtigt. Auf seine Biografie wird dabei jedoch nur begrenzt eingegangen, da sie zum Einen nicht vollständig belegt ist und zum Anderen den Rahmen dieser Arbeit überschreiten würde...
