Die Kongregation für die Glaubenslehre erklärt, dass die Ehe nicht nur eine „beliebige Gemeinschaft von menschlichen Personen“ ist, sondern eine Vorrangstellung innerhalb der Schöpfungsordnung einnimmt. Diese Exklusivität zeigt sich auch in der Würde des Ehesakraments. Homosexuelle Beziehungen dagegen würden „gegen das natürliche Sittengesetz verstoßen.“ Begründet wird dieser Verstoß durch die fehlende Möglichkeit der Fort¬pflanzung, die der eigentliche Zweck von sexuellen Handlungen sei.
