Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Literaturgeschichte, Epochen, Note: 1,7, Freie Universität Berlin (Otto-Suhr-Institut), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nie zuvor emigrierten so viele Autoren aus einem Land wie zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus aus Deutschland. Etwa 2500 Schriftsteller verließen aus Angst vor einer Verfolgung aus rassistischen oder politischen Gründen das Land, viele von ihnen direkt nach der Machtübernahme Hitlers, weitere nach dem Reichstagsbrand sowie der Bücherverbrennung vom 10. Mai 1933.1 So heterogen die Masse der Vertriebenen war, so unterschiedlich kamen die einzelnen Exilanten mit dem Leben im Exil zurecht. Während ein geringer Teil der exilierten Schriftsteller sich weitestgehend ohne große Probleme an die neue Situation anpasste, litt der überwiegende Teil an verschiedenen Verlusterfahrungen. Diese aufzuzeigen, ist der erste Teil meiner vorliegenden Arbeit. Für manche Autoren wogen die Verlusterfahrungen so schwer, dass ein Weiterleben für sie nicht mehr in Frage kam, sie begingen Suizid. Was die einzelnen Beweggründe dafür waren, erläutere ich im zweiten Teil meiner Arbeit. Exemplarisch werde ich es an drei Schriftstellern – Kurt Tucholsky, Ernst Toller, Stefan Zweig – untersuchen. Wichtig bei der Auswahl war mir, dass sie den Selbstmord aus „freien Stücken“ vollzogen, ihr Leben also nicht in unmittelbarer Gefahr war, wie etwa bei Walter Hasenclever,2 denn nur in diesem Fall lässt sich der Einfluss der Verlusterfahrungen des Exils ausreichend analysieren.
