Sie reichen jedoch bei weitem nicht aus, um die Person in ihrer Gänze zu umfassen. Bis heute beschäftigen sich Germanisten, Historiker und andere Wissenschaftler mit Stefan George und dem George-Kult, wurde seine Person doch zu Lebzeiten zeitweise wie ein Popstar verehrt. Fast 80 Jahre sind seit dem Ableben des „Meisters“ vergangen. Das Interesse an seiner Person und an dem Kreis von Literaten, Akademikern, Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern, den er um sich scharte, ist aber bis heute ungebrochen. Georges Hang zur Selbst-Inszenierung und die Aura, die ihn umgab, machen seine Dichtung und sein Wirken auch Jahrzehnte nach seinem Tod noch zu einem spannenden Forschungsgegenstand.
Geboren am 12. Juli 1868 in Büdesheim, begann Stefan George 1886 bereits mit 18 Jahren zu dichten. Laut Germanist Karlhans Kluncker sei außer Goethe kein zweiter Dichter „auch wissenschaftlich derart fruchtbar gewesen“ wie George. 1892 begründete er mit einer kleinen Gruppe gleichaltriger Dichter das Zeitschriftenprojekt „Blätter für die Kunst“, eine elitäre Zeitschrift von Dichtern für Dichter. Nachdem er darin seine Bewährung gesucht hatte, widmete er sich zunächst den Geisteswissenschaften und schließlich der persönlichen und dichterischen Erziehung einzelner junger Menschen, die sich um die Jahrhundertwende im sogenannten George-Kreis um ihn versammelten. Der George-Kreis ist der Hauptuntersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit, im Speziellen werden die Rituale des Kreises näher betrachtet.
Rituale ereignen sich überall und regelmäßig wie zum Beispiel Begrüßungs- und Verabschiedungsrituale, Hochzeiten, Gipfeltreffen, Staatsbesuche und Einschulungen oder die Papstwahl. All diese Handlungen laufen nach festgelegten Kriterien ab und haben bestimmte Funktionen. Die Funktionen von Ritualen im George-Kreis werden in dieser Arbeit unter soziologischen, psychologischen und kultischen Aspekten untersucht und bewertet.
Stefan George ist laut Literaturwissenschaftler Wolfgang Braungardt in der Geschichte der modernen deutschen Lyrik der Autor, „der dem Ritual am stärksten verpflichtet ist und dessen Möglichkeiten am konsequentesten entfaltet.“ Dies zeigt sich sowohl in seinen Gedichten als auch auf der sozialen Ebene im George-Kreis. In dieser Arbeit werden verschiedene Rituale des George-Kreises betrachtet, der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Lesungen, die als Initiationsritual fungierten.
