Early music from the source

For early music players especially: a lifetime of carefully considered, gracefully presented information. Kuijken, a flutist, plays exquisitely. Here we meet him as a graceful and engaging teacher, who urges us to play with lively feeling and expression, based on sympathetic, grounded understanding of the style and values of Baroque composers and performers. He points his readers to helpful sources, some first-hand accounts directly from the period, some from research just coming into print, that might easily be overlooked. I'm grateful to have read this brief but very helpful book.

Scholarly and practical!

I was well aware of this fine musician being a traverso player myself (amateur), but this lends so much depth to the art of playing the instrument that I know I will read it many, many times over. Thank you for writing this book, Barthold!
