In Rom hatten sie mehr Rechte und mussten nicht, wie beispielsweise in Griechenland, Abseits der Gesellschaft leben. Das bedeutete aber noch nicht, dass sie auch politische Rechte besaßen.
Die Frauen zur damaligen Zeit waren zwar in gewissem Maße emanzipiert, aber auf keinen Fall vollkommen gleichberechtigt. Allerdings waren sie auch nie absolut abhängig von ihrem Ehemann. Eine Abhängigkeit bestand nur zum Vater, was aber auch für die Männer galt. Diese „Patria Potestas“ endete erst mit dem Tod des Vaters oder wenn er den Römer/ die Römerin emanzipierte. Ein Mann war damit vollkommen rechtsfähig und konnte die „Patria Potestas“ selbst ausüben. Frauen mussten dagegen erst drei Kinder zur Welt bringen, um ohne einen Vormund über ihr eigenes Vermögen zu entscheiden zu können. Außerdem konnte sie nie die „Patria Potestas“ über jemand anderen haben.
